MP4 container with H.264 + AAC
An .mp4 file is a 'box' that holds a video track and an audio track. In TikTok videos the picture is usually encoded in H.264 (also called AVC) and the sound in AAC. That pairing has been the de facto standard of the internet for over a decade, which is why practically every device knows how to play it.
Vertical resolution as uploaded
TikToks are shot in vertical 9:16. Depending on how the creator uploaded it, the file may be 1080×1920, 720×1280 or smaller. We don't change the resolution or the orientation: what you see in the app is what you get, with the same pixel dimensions.
No intermediate re-encoding
We don't 'convert' the video: TikTok already hosts it as MP4, and we hand you that public file directly. Because it never passes through a conversion step, no quality loss is added and the original frames are left untouched.
Sensible file size
Thanks to H.264 compression, a TikTok under a minute long usually takes up a few megabytes; multi-minute videos weigh more. That's far less than a screen recording of the same length, which phones typically save at a much higher bitrate.

What exactly is an MP4 file?
MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) is a container format: it doesn't define how the picture is compressed, but how video, audio, subtitle and metadata tracks are packaged into a single file. That's why two .mp4 files can carry different codecs inside. TikTok's uses the most compatible combination available, H.264 for the picture and AAC for the sound.
MP4 vs MOV: same family, different job
MOV is Apple's QuickTime container, and MP4 was designed from it. In practice they're close relatives: iPhones record in MOV and Apple's editors handle it beautifully. Outside the Apple ecosystem, though, MOV causes more trouble (older Windows, TVs, some consoles). For sharing and archiving, MP4 is the safe bet.
MP4 vs WebM: the open web's format
WebM is an open container backed by Google using VP8, VP9 or AV1 codecs. It works great in browsers and on YouTube, but many desktop players, TVs and especially video editors import it poorly or not at all. A TikTok in WebM would force a conversion before editing; in MP4 it's used as is.
Why download instead of screen recording
A screen recording does produce an MP4, but not the same file: it includes TikTok's interface (buttons, comments, progress bar), the sound passes through the system, and any notification gets baked in. You also have to trim the start and end by hand. Downloading the published file gives you the clean video, with its exact duration and no foreign elements.
How to import it into CapCut, Premiere or DaVinci
With the MP4 on your device, open your editor and use 'Import' or drag the file into the media panel. Since TikTok content is vertical, create the sequence in 9:16 (1080×1920) so the video fills the frame without black bars. If you're mixing it with horizontal footage, the editor will letterbox it or you'll need to reframe.
Playing it on a TV, console or in the car
Copy the MP4 to a USB stick formatted as FAT32 or exFAT and plug it into your smart TV, PlayStation or Xbox, or the car's infotainment system. Almost all of them recognize H.264 MP4 with no setup. If a very old device rejects the file, the cause is usually the vertical resolution or HEVC, not the container.
What if the file comes in HEVC (H.265)?
Some high-quality TikTok videos are served with the H.265/HEVC codec inside the same MP4 container. Modern Macs, iPhones and Android phones play it fine; on Windows 10 or 11 you sometimes need the HEVC Video Extensions from the Microsoft Store, or VLC. Current editors accept it, though some transcode it on import.
Responsible use of the downloaded MP4
Downloading a video as MP4 does not make you its owner. The creator keeps every right to their work. Watching offline, saving it as a reference or archiving your own videos is reasonable use; re-uploading it as your own, cropping out the author's credit or monetizing it without permission is not. If you share it, always credit the person who made it.

Do I need to convert the TikTok video to MP4?
No. TikTok already stores and serves its videos as MP4, so 'converting TikTok to MP4' really just means downloading the public file as it is. TikSnap doesn't re-encode anything: it delivers that MP4 with its original H.264 video and AAC audio.
Does the MP4 play on iPhone and Android?

Can I open it on Windows without installing software?
In most cases yes: the 'Movies & TV' app and Media Player on Windows 10 and 11 open H.264 MP4 with nothing extra. Only if a particular video comes in HEVC (H.265) might you need Microsoft's extension or a player like VLC, which handles everything.
What resolution is the downloaded MP4?
The same one the creator published the video in: usually 1080×1920 or 720×1280 vertical. We don't upscale or shrink the picture; you receive the file at its original dimensions. If an older video was uploaded at a lower resolution, it downloads as is.
How big is a TikTok video in MP4?
It depends on duration, resolution and how much motion the scene has. Short clips under a minute usually weigh a few megabytes; multi-minute videos can reach tens of megabytes. It will always be smaller than an equivalent screen recording, because the file is already efficiently compressed with H.264.
Is MP4 or MOV better for editing?
For a TikTok clip, MP4. MOV is excellent within the Apple ecosystem, but MP4 opens in any editor on any system. Since the inner content (H.264 + AAC) is the same, converting to MOV wouldn't gain you any quality; it would only add a step and, depending on the converter, an unnecessary loss.
Can I download videos from private accounts?
No. TikSnap only works with public videos. If an account is private or the creator restricted who can view the video, the file isn't publicly accessible and the tool won't process it. This is deliberate: we respect the privacy settings each person chooses for their content.
Is it legal to download a TikTok as MP4?
Downloading a public video to watch privately is generally accepted use; downloading your own videos as a backup is entirely legitimate.
